Alfred Hershey was an American bacteriologist and geneticist whose work helped establish DNA as genetic material. He shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning viral genetics. He was born on December 4, 1908, and died on May 22, 1997.
